Will you wait until the TV is spoil to change to an LCD/Plasma TV? Barry

I was looking through my articles when i notice this rather interesting post from Barry Ritholtz from the Big Picture talking about his need to change to a new TV after the existing one is going haywire:

So the old 27″ Sony TV — a 32″ CRT in the bedroom is — finally dying. Turn it on, and the screen goes on and off until its warmed up. I want to replace it with a bigger flat panel — I want 37″, the wife insists on smaller. Looks like 32″ will be the compromise.

I am torn between getting something really nice or a something that’s a really good deal. I am leaning towards the latter.  The TV in the den is kickass — and I really don’t want to be tempted to watch anything other than late night TV before bedtime.

What is interesting is that here is a guy who can well afford it being the main man at Fusion IQ and talking on CNBC regularly on all things finance and you see that he only wanted to change to the new LCD tv because his existing one is spoiled.

Granted, he did post quite a fair bit on this extravagant selection of cars in the past but its always respected when someone as rich as him cannot be tempted to changed to keep up with the latest technology.

Interestingly, my good friend actually bought a 42 inch LCD for a much higher price for his room less than a month ago. of course i believe his room is smaller than Ritholtz and 42 inch is just too big. The evaluation was between a LED Samsung 32 inch and a LCD Samsung 42 inch. I quit recommending to get a LCD 32 inch for him at a much much lower price and more suited for his room when i realise all he was after was a Samsung and no other brand and that he is far more likely to want to spend around SGD1300-1600 on a TV to replace his 26 inch still working LCD.

That will bring his room to have 1 42 inch LCD TV, 1 26 inch LCD Monitor, 1 24 inch LCD Monitor.

I wish that i can have that urge to upgrade but sadly we are still hoping that our 29 inch CRT in our Living Room can last a few years. The 12 years old Sony Trinitron in my Mum’s room is gone already but we got a gift of a CRT without remote control so we are making do with it.

In life, sometimes you realise that things that add value to your life is not the size of your CRT or LCD but the people you share watching the CRT or LCD tv with.

The TV in the den is the center of home entertainment system — that was my call, and its a great set up.

The tube in the bedroom — where everything is decorated and the room is filled with throw pillows — is the missus’ call.

If i were solely my decision, it would have been upgraded years ago . . .
