My phone died on me ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Just when i thought i dun have to spend any more money after the May-June vacation and the wedding on Sunday, My O2 Mini died on me 4 days ago!

The LCD seems to be working and then not working haphazardly and it is out of warranty.

Plus it is an LCD problem, so fixing it will probably be the cost of a new phone, that is why i will not be fixing it. The phone to replace this used to be straight forward. Get a Windows¸¸™ Pocket PC OS phone.

But that will cost me alot. Plus the fact that my job nature does not afford me to carry a camera phone i will need to take out the camera function on my own (That really sucks.)

What i would really like is keypad or qwerty keyboard user input. One of the pet peeves i have about the O2 mini after using it for 2 years odd is that every time you need to type something you got to slide out the styles.

That is extremely irritating after a while. It is not to say that i am not good with the stylus (I think i’m pretty good with all the input options), but if you are on a bus, you do not wanna use 2 hands to input text. So i think my priority will be as follows.

Considerations:

  1. Ability to sync contact. task list and appointments to Microsoft outlook on the desktop. I think most of us are pretty tie in to this functionality. Microsoft has created a very high switching cost by doing this.
  2. Ability to read eWallet files. My eWallet files is pretty important to me so it is important that i am able to get access to the information.
  3. A Listing tree software to make simple lists for various task. This useful feature will enable you to have many list for different purposes.
  4. Ability to read RSS. I do not keep track of market news that frequently due to work schedule anymore. Thus I look to these information that i can get to read on the go.
  5. Able to read text files. Some of the investment info i read normally is stored in this format.
  6. QWERTY keyboard. nuff said.
  7. Stable battery life. Without this, you will be very frustrated. Much more than bad user interface or functionality. Trust me.
  8. Ability to read iSilox.Palm users used to champion this alot for its reading capabilities. I do have some books on this that i would still like to read.
  9. Surf Wireless. this is a new requirement. Always wanna surf when the comp is not on at night. If this function is there, i can check my options information when i sleep or wake up.(its US market. bo bian)
  10. Another new requirement is to be able to read Windows Help File (OHM extension) files.
  11. Office functionailty. This one is not so important. I cannot believe how people can use excel or word on a small screen
  12. Read Acrobat.
  13. Browze the internet.

What i do not need or can do without:

  1. GPS (I don’t drive.) Bus Guide or street directory on pda is good enough.
  2. Play Video or MP3. I have a wonderful little play in Meizu M6 to do that.
  3. 3G. Is this really that useful? I heard it sucks battery life! Please advice me my friends.
  4. Games. I don’t game much on the go. Just a few to satisfy my female friends (You know who you are!)

As you can see, those are some tough requirements. And i believe i should still be looking for a Pocket PC if not a Windows Mobile device.

Planning what phone to buy is all about needs and learning what you can do without.

Its almost like how would plan for investments and financial planning, knowing your goals, identify current requirements and future requirements before selecting your device.

The most expensive or the hippiest product might not suit you. Will be keeping everyone up to date on this.

LCD prices had dropped

Hi carrom, first of all, thank you for responding.

Yes that is the price that i’m looking at. I failed to mentioned that it is not the only problem. my audio is also broken so im using speakerphone function for calls.

At the end of the day, I will consider your suggestion and look into it.

Thanks alot.

You can try the Dopod 838Pro. I did testing on it before and battery life is quite good. 3.5G enabled, and has a qwerty keyboard.

The other is the new Palm Treo 750.

Both running on Windows Mobile 5.

Dopod is serving me fine for now… But the 2 camera wld be a very big No no… Since my last visit to sim lim, I dun remember seeing 1 pda phone without camera wor… Your best bet would be get a separate pda so that there is no camera… My 2 cents…

ZW,

You should understand my situation there so i see that your suggestion is very valid.

Chantc,

Thanks for the advice, I had a friend who owns the 838 Pro for a while. His gripe about it is keyboard SHOULD NEVER be a slide out concept, thats why he sold it off to switch back to palm treo 750.

Btw, what phone do you own?

Regards.

Oh Drizzt, you can’t use camera phone? Then I’m not sure which PDAs you can use.

Regarding the 838Pro, I think it depends on your usage. If you make calls more often, you’ll prefer the slide out. However, 1 thing about the sliding out. Too many times and your PDA can be gone within a year. :)

For me, I’m using a normal phone. However, I occasionally test out PDAs, especially 3G/3.5G PDAs. So far, I’ve also tested the Dopod D810 (which is quite good too), some HP models. HP is quite far behind now in PDAs.

The Palm 750 looks quite ok though. Haven’t got the chance to test it yet. Rather new. :) The Palm design, but running Mobile 5. The pocket explorer on Mobile 5 is much better than the versions on PocketPC 2003.
