Could Palm Really Resurrect itself this time round with the Palm Pre??
What could fuel a 33% jump in share price of Palm overnight? This announcement.
Today Palm announced its next-generation smartphone, the Pre. It is a touch-based phone, that has a 3.1-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution. It has EVDO Rev. A for connectivity, as well as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with stereo support. It has 8GB of on-board storage, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, replaceable battery, and 3.5mm headset jack. It comes with a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Palm also introduced its next-generation mobile platform, called webOS. It includes gesture-based input for interacting with the device. The Pre will be launched on the Sprint network in the first half of 2009. Palm later confirmed that it is also working on a WCDMA version of the Pre, though it didn’t say when or where it would be made available.
Let me just say from a techie geeky point of view, I really hope this would work for them. Gadget tech based companies like Palm and Research in Motion, which made the Blackberry’s have their share price tied to the number of units sold, which are tied to the differentiation from their competitors, which is tied to what i would think ease of use, innovative products that tap good usability, technology edge ,style as well as competitve cost.
Now most of us have been really dissappointed with Palm the last few years, due to the failure to follow up with their incumbent operating system and further alienating alot of Palm OS fans by moving towards Windows CE operating system. This to me is a good move. They are actually coming up with a WEB STACK OS, which would enable numerous web, css and javascript based developers to use their skills to developed based on their open up API.
The key for Palm is to realise that they are not in such a favorable position. They are lagging in sales to iPhone and Windows CE, so they need to take the Google Android path by opening things up to developers, focusing on building a good hardware, which is what they are good at from the Palm Treo days.
If you ask a productivity geek and tech geek, this is good for me if their API is easy. How well this is received will really depend on
- Pricing
- A very user friendly and fast UI
- App Store that is quickly taken up by both vendors, opensource developers and users
- Bascially, tech companies require a network effect to function. They need their friends and complementary companies.
